Optimizing your website design so it accommodates various device sizes is just the first step in a mobile-friendly site strategy. What works for your desktop site, need not necessarily work for your mobile site. Here are some tips to make your site optimized for mobile devices.

  • Make sure the site elements are optimized size-wise, so users do not have to use pinch gestures to zoom in. Test your site to check if it can be used with just swipe and tap motions. If it needs pinch gestures, then the content needs to be resized so it is easily readable.
  • Use icons instead of text where it seems apt in your mobile website design. This applies to common elements on most sites such as menu, contact and shop buttons. Make sure the buttons are optimally sized so it does not lead to misplaced clicks, even when people with large fingers use it. Alternatively, you can have an option where the view zooms in when the user clicks on a button, and the user has to tap the button again to confirm it; this is just to be sure that they intended to click that button, and not the one beside it.mobile-image
  • Make sure the media files can be played on nearly all devices. HTML5 is a good option. While you’re on it, keep image sizes small, so the page loads faster. Don’t export the same content that you have on your desktop site for your mobile site. The screen size of devices is much smaller, meaning the content it can accommodate on a page is also much lesser. Users will have to keep endlessly scrolling if they have to read everything that is on your site. Instead, swap it for precise and short content to keep your site mobile-friendly.
